Hi yourself, Patty!
I have been keeping up with klarinet, but yes, my new and old studentshave
been keeping me busy. All my clarinet students have been doing great. I
even got a compliment from a colleague who teaches band at one of the high
schools here who said that the clarinet students I send her from the feeder
elementary school are her best clarinet students. Guess I am learning
something after all from my lessons (which I love). I really am pleased
with all my senior bands (6th and 7th grade students)- I work hard with them
on dynamics, phrasing and articulation in their band music and the results
are astounding! I have no idea what kind of expectations American grade
school band students have placed on them, but here in Canada we do not
usually hear a lot of these musical refinements, yet there is no reason
young students cannot play musically.

My own clarinet studies are progressing well. I seem to have crossed a
barrier this summer and am now able to play many sixteenth note passages
(remember my beginner status). Right now my teacher and I are working on
some Rose Studies, though veeeeery slowly, as well as the Mozart Clarinet
Quintet, which I can actually play though not quite up to speed. I bought
myself the Bonade book of Orchestral Studies for Clarinet and am having fun
playing some of this wonderful literature. I especially love the 3rd
movement solo from the Rachmaninoff Second Symphony! I just bought a
recording of this with the Russian National Orchesta (?) with Mikhail
Pletniev conducting, just to hear a Russian play the solo. Beautiful. Does
anyone know who their principal clarinetist is?

Patty, are you going to ClarinetFest in New Orleans? I want to - maybe we
can meet there!

Keep in touch.

Cheers!

Audrey
