Roger,

First, I think you are very wise to pose (and post) this hypothetical
question in advance of any example of it. Clearly you are aware of the
problems that can and do arise with any set of curricular rules -
especially in a University that prides itself on being flexible!

As both an amateur singer and clarinet player, I can see a lot of crossover
between choral singing (especially small choral groups) and wind instrument
ensemble. One factor which might benefit the student is that while singing
does require some technique, it is a more natural and innate technique than
playing any instrument, and should allow the student to concentrate on the
music rather than the instrument. One negative is that it is relatively
easier to hide your voice in a crowd and avoid having to face the conductor
as the source of a wrong note. Easier, that is, than in the usual wind
ensemble.

I think we would all be interested in what policy IWU finally adopts.
