Subj: [kl] First encounter w/Buffet Prestige bass clarinet to low C
Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 18:14:55 -0400

Clark Fobes has talked about these instruments, but talk only goes so
far. I'm going to do the same thing, and I realize that what I might say
ALSO goes only so far. In spite of the irony, here goes.

Got my hands on a new Buffet Bass Clarinet. I was impressed by many
things. First off, the scale of this instrument is much better in tune
than my Selmer 33. (Won't be giving up my Selmer because, 1) I got mine
for a great price many years ago and 2) though not, in many ways as good
as the new Buffet, will serve me well for my remaining years, and 3) I
can't afford a new one.)

The ergonomics of the Buffet are very comfortable. It would take me
about 10 minutes to get use to every key on the horn.

The instrument is mechanically simpler than my Selmer 33 (which hasn't
been but could be a nightmare to adjust). The Buffet has but one low Db
right below the thumb hook. It also has only one low C key spatula,
which is right below the Db. There is a roller, and I'm a bassoon player
so I can deal with that.

Better scale, less to go wrong, lowest C is a beautiful tone, B and C
over the register break are but a few cents sharp!!!!!

Wow, what a horn. I'm sure Buffet is going to sell these puppies as fast
as they can get them into the states and set them up.

Congratulations, Buffet. What a quantum leap with your new bass
clarinet.
