Hello everyone,

I'm in the middle of 3- and 4-service call days, but I have to take a moment
to mention a CD I recently bought. I believe Mark Charette's already sung
its praises and I want to second the motion. It's of the Riverdale Ensemble
from here in Toronto, with clarinet- and bass-clarinetist Stephen Fox. Steve
is well known internationally for his handmade clarinets and repair and
adjusting artistry, but around here he is becoming equally well thought of
for this group he helped found. They program a recital series each year of
unusual neo-Romantic 20th century pieces that is the first stop for local
chamber music lovers looking for something different, played with flair and
great singing style.

This CD features clarinet, violin and piano in the beautiful, mellow Trio of
Hans Gal, Canadian Daniel Foley's Hommage a Henri Rousseau (a great
companion to the famous Milhaud "Suite" for this combination, and which
shows off Steve's beautiful haunting bass clarinet sound) and the
Khachaturian Trio. Now before Dan Leeson moans out loud (I believe this was
on his infamous "Top Ten Groaner Pieces of All-Time for Clarinet" in the
Instrumentalist) this is a performance that has finally made some sense for
me of this densely-packed Gypsy-like piece, and has huge amounts of flair
and fun in the doing. Steve plays on his own Benade NX and German Boehm
model clarinets, and gets a full and sweet sound that sings through the long
lines of this repertoire, in a wonderful and unique way.

In the interests of complete disclosure, Steve is my regular clarinet
technician, but there haven't been and never will be any "freebies"; he's
just too good! I paid full fare for my CD and don't regret a penny of it; I
just hope this gets out into the hands of players everywhere; the playing,
the recorded sound, even the cover art are all gorgeous and this deserves to
be heard. Contact info: website@-----.com
