Walter:

1. It's not a concert - its a rehearsal.

2. You know the music better than you admit. Think back to other
rehearsals for messy passages and work on them. In fact, do a few of them
in a movement - then, when the musicians are sick of short passages, do the
entire movement. then move on to another movement. Save the least
problematic movement for last. Give the orchestra a good feeling to go
home with.

3. No matter what, those musicians who respect you now will still respect
you. Those who don't aren't going to change their minds - ESPECIALLY if
you do a good job. Only a handful will care - and that may or may not
include the blond in the second violins you secretly want to impress.

4. Worry about clear downbeats. You'll never match the internal cues of
the regular conductor, so just do what works.

5. Look sincere. Don't lecture. Don't stab anyone.
