The recent quips about conductors and oboists -- and now
suddenly Walter finds that he **is** one, and he must stare into the
issues from the other side of the podium -- causes me think of my
own teacher. She doubles on a bunch of single reed instruments and
brass, and she told me one day in a lowered tone of voice: "You can
always tell a double reed player because.... <I don't want to post it
here>"
Last week I happened to see her carrying a bassoon. I raised my
eyebrow and said "You can always tell a double reed layer because....."
All she could do was blush. She's been asked to play bassoon in a pit.

So what will Walter tell us after his new conducting assignment?
<chuckle> We'll all be waiting to hear....
