Subj: [kl] Resting horn on kness

Gene,

As someone who has suffered from repetitive strain injuries and tendonitis
for quite a few years, I also find it a necessity to rest the horn on my
knees when I practice. It certainly does free up the right hand. Only
problem is, when you have to play standing up, and I use a strap as well, it
is a different feeling and the hand no longer feels so free. (Doesn't help
that I'm playing the Neilsen at the moment). I plead guilty to moving
around a lot when I play, to the consternation of every teacher I have ever
come across. However, having read the Inner Game of Music, I find that it
is more a state of mind about the weight of the clarinet, and that when it
comes to a standing up performance I usually don't feel the weight of the
instrument. Half the pain of the thumb comes from gripping with the right
hand far too tightly as well.

Just wish I could convince students to practice with the horn on knees. It
would save so much unnecessary pain!

Cheers Kathy Williams
