Tim Roberts posted after Roger's query:

>The West Side Story must by the Selections, arr. by Duthoit.....also good.<

<<<Yes, indeed. It is not an easy arrangement, but it's quite effective.
Medleys often fall apart in the transitions, but this one holds together
very well. I wish the finale ("America") were a bit longer; he runs through
the melody three times and then quits, as if he had reached his measure
limit...>>>

My band up here in Seattle played this earlier in the season -- it's a
terrific arrangement. Saved my butt, too.

A couple of weeks ago a friend asked my wife & I to sub for him in the pit
for a local community theater production of West Side Story. We split the
book (Reed 3), which calls for 1 human to play all of the following:

--piccolo
--flute
--oboe
--english horn
--clarinet
--bass clarinet
--alto sax
--tenor sax
--bass sax (I played on tenor, 8va basso when possible).

. . . so Julie and I loaded pretty much every instrument we own into the
van and gave it a shot. Either (a) Leonard Bernstein was a madman, or (b)
he actually knew a person that owned all of these and could play them. Once
the bass sax was paid for, you'd get rich off the doubler's fees!

I've played a fair number of musicals. This one was a complete BLAST.
Bernstein was a genius.

. . . because of the Duthoit arrangement, moreover, I already knew all the
licks! It really tracks the book of the show very closely. I'll like it
more next time.
