....seriously, one of the more important things that you'll learn
if you read Benade (or a similar textbook) is that *direction* --
including the delay and direction of reverberations after the sound has
moved away from its source -- has a huge effect on how our brains
evaluate pitch and loudness and tone color (tone character).
One of the major limitations of headphones is that the listener
does not profit from minor head movements if wearing headphones. The
headphones move with the listener, and therefore the listener misses
important cues that help our brain unravel the sound.

It's interesting to read how important this effect is.
Apparently it's more important than intuition would suggest.
