Neil:

No doubt you are right that the pieces I have requested are beyond my
abilities. In some cases,
I have benefitted from practicing challenging material, such as the
Stravinsky 3 pieces or the transcribed Bach Suites for solo cello. As an
adult beginner (I have some background on saxophone and recorder), I want
material that is both challenging and interesting enough musically to keep my

(short) attention. Just from listening, I guess that I could begin studying
some, if not all, of the Messaien. As for the Viennese stuff, I have no idea
(it both looks and sounds terrifying) but this music interests me, and again,
if I could find pieces of medium difficulty, they would be fun to study.
Recommendations?
