Michael Bryant wrote,
>>The name is Norman Lebrecht (1948-) the music critic of the London
>>Daily Telegraph.
>>
>>Maestro Myth dates from 1991
>>
>>He is also author of
>>The Companion to 20th Century Music (1993)
>>which is packed with iconoclasms and dismissive remarks.
>>It has received some very hostile reviews...
>>
>>And further revelations appear in
>>When the Music Stops - Managers, Maestros and the Corporate Murder
>>of Classical Music (1996) Simon and Schuster

Lebrecht also wrote the equally incendiary _Who Killed Classical Music?_,
published in 1997. I don't remember the publisher. My copy is still buried
in the 42 boxes of books from the room where the ceiling fell down.

(We've got a new ceiling and fresh paint in there -- job finished yesterday.
Now all we need to do is put back cupboard doors, hardware, shelves, books,
audio system, CD collection -- yikes..... Meanwhile, all the hammering for
the demolition shot new cracks across the ceilings in the two connecting
rooms, so I think within the next year or so, we'll have the whole job to do
over in the bedroom and living room. At least now the contractor is outta
here and I can practice in peace -- haven't touched a clarinet or sax since
he started. The only thing I've played in a week and a half is the piano,
because it's electronic and I can practice with earphones.)

Apropos of >Who Killed Classical Music?_, AOhelL is busy doing its best for
the cause. The AOL entertainment news feature includes a pull-down menu for
news about various genres of music. It includes Country, Rock, Jazz and a
number of other categories both expected and unusual, including Techno as a
separate genre -- but no category for Classical! I just discovered that
omission today, since I usually bypass the dumbed-down AOL proprietary
features in favor of information available elsewhere. I just got done
writing an angry complaint to support@-----. Shame on those people!
