I think this is because the 5RV and B40 are relatively closed and offer too
much resistance for sax players used to very open mouthpieces. You could
try a Selmer C85 115 or 120 (I use the 115 for big band playing myself).
Vandoren makes a 5JB which is designed as a jazz mouthpiece. It is VERY
open, but may then have TOO MUCH projection for the use you have in mind.
The Selmer has the biggest sound of any mouthpiece I have, including
several Vandorens from 5RV through B46.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
