I have been earning my living giving performances venues ranging from
nursing homes to neighborhood bars now for over 30 years, and most of my
repertriore comes from tunes that I have transcribed off of old records
and CD's. I have a whole basement full of "work tape" in a dusty old
box, many of them unfinished projects. When I transcribe, I always use
cassett tapes because you have to keep rewinding to get your part
"right". I am a total believer in the art of transcription, both for
professionals and students. They don't have to look perfect. One New
Years Eve many years ago, I had to get the "correct" melody line for
Auld Lang Syne, and I was in such a hurry to get to th gig that my
"transcription" (off an old Guy Lombardo record) looked like a bunch of
scribbling. I'm sure my music theory teachers at Oberlin would not have
approved, but it worked for me, and we got paid.
I think you should help your student make a work tape of Pete
Fountain tunes that he likes, and one-by-one, make little transcriptions
of the melody lines. Later on, work with him on transcribing the solos.
