The laminates were very red in color. The "grain" appearance would go all
through the wood. Also the "grain" was very prominent. In sections like
the bell, where the angle of the cut changes, the "grain" looks extremely
fancy. To the best of my knowledge, the non-laminates were always black in
color. This is based simply from what I have observed on auction sites and
so on. I don't know if they made laminate and non-laminate instruments at
the same time.

Any chance you could send a picture?

I doubt that true rosewood was ever used for the Pan American line as these
were strictly their bottom line student horn.
