Sorry. I don't follow. I see nothing wrong with this. You are asking for an opinion (based on your
earlier description of this conductor) from people on this discussion forum. It is not strictly
speaking on-topic, but it is sufficiently close that it shouldn't be considered inappropriate.

In answer to your question, I think that a conductor could only really direct this way with a
professional or very good amateur orchestra. With youth ensembles and other amateur groups, a clear
beat is required (often at the expense of artistic arm-waving).

I think that most people on this list would agree that a professional orchestra could perform
equally well without a conductor as they do with one. (sound of tin-opener and excited
freedom-obsessed worm-like creatures) In fact some would argue for the total removal of conductors,
branding them an unnecessary expense and nuisance. My point is that a strong beat and visual cues
are less necessary for these players, and the artistic direction can be more marked.

Personally, at the moment (having picked up the clarinet again after a break of 10 years or so) I'd
prefer the clear beat. 10 years ago, when I was in the habit of (amateur) ensemble playing, perhaps
the artistic quasi-dance you described. But in the world of amateur oper-antics I'd go for the beat
EVERY time!!!!!!

Regards,

Ian
