David,

I appreciate your post--not only because you verified that i did get it
right!

For a fully professional player to admit the transposition biz can be
confusing is refreshing.

And i will pass on my "cheat" that helps me remember how to read Eb parts
on Bb instrument (or at least start on the right note in the right key).

Low register clarinet fingerings for clarion range notes, ie. see D
written (fourth line), finger the clarion, leave off the register key,
name G.

This doesn't work as method to read because also have to play up and 8va
and that step tangles my brain.

Transposition works best for me as starting note, then intervals.

additional trivia on subject...
But last Tuesday, reading Pops concert music, only music calling for A
clarinet orchestra version of Grainger IRISH TUNE. Some student had
written the transpose note names-- D# for E. I played several clunkers
until i erased the sharp names and thought of flat for each written note.
