I suppose the way a conductor conducts might depend upon the group being
conducted. An amateur or school group would probably need something more
basic and direct in the way of a beat pattern. I'm assuming this orchestra
was a professional group.

I would and could probably get along just fine with a conductor as you
described. It might even be refreshing and enlightening.
