Now I know Neil was kidding, but seriously, if you want to read about the
history of Western Music, there's a fascinating book by Irving Kolodin
called "The Continuity of Music: A History of Influence". It's out of
print, but some library probably has it or can get it on inter-library
loan. Much more readable than Grout, which was the bane of undergrad
music major's existence 30 years ago, and is the kind of book that gives
musicology a bad name.
