Subj: [kl] Saxophonist problems with his clarinet playing

Hello to all of you,
i'm new in this list, i'am a swiss-french jazz saxophonist (40 years old) who
begin (again) to study the clarinet at the little conservatory of the town
where i live near Paris. And i have a lot of problems with my clarinet playing!
I actually study it 2 or 3 hours evreyday, but i think i loose my time with
the kind of problems of jazz saxophonist who try to play clarinet in the
"classical way". (if it's mean something!)
First I hope you can understand my very bad english.
One of my saxophone's student offered me a Festival Buffet in good shape, i
use a Vandoren B4O profil 88 , with vandoren 3 and half . I' ve tried the Grand
Concert 3 but it seems to be too soft.
Here is a list of my main problems
- i have taken some lessons on sax with Joe Allard. I have learned with him to
play with more lips "out" (not to much) than my actual clarinet teacher do. As
a matter of fact my intonation in high register is very low. But if i think
about the high note during my breathing and play it "right now" it's almost
ok. I am quite shure the way Joe Allard use to do is better (for me) than the
"french way", but i like to have your advise on that. Because i cannot prove
that on my teacher ;-) who is a very good musician nevertheless.
What is your advice about the lips position ?
- I don't use a short barrel (like all my saxophonist friends who played
clarinet) , i have tried (just a while) a "Chabash" barillet. The Chabash
gave me the feeling to be more adapted to me. The best result i had was with
a Selmer S 10. And i prefer a lot the Prestige model, but my playing is so
basic ...
Do you think i have to play with a shorter barrel like my friends? I am not
shure to be capable to made a good choice myself.
- i have also a big problem with my breathing. I am always plenty of air,
it's the way i feel that. I have to spit out my air (lot of pression)
before taking a new breath. I know it's sounds a little crazy, but i feel like
i don't use may air in the right way. I'm not such a sturdy men, but i like to
play without amplification also with strong drummer with my saxophone.
Is it possible that i use to many air pression on my clarinet and that
another "perce" would be better for me than the Festival Buffet ???
I actually don't want to play my clarinet in a Jazz style, i just want to
learn first and play some easy pieces. My actual idol on clarinet is Sabine
Meyer (when i was a child it was Guy Deplus on Messian Quatuor "Fin du
temps"and Michel Portal on Boulez "Domaine" piece and Benny Goodman at
Stockholm ;-), but i have now to listen some other to !
These were my first questions.
