Yes, it is. He plays on a 7 key clarinet - which is pretty impressive.

I have found some very nice Weber CDs - two of Shifrin and one of Michael
Marriner. Both, in my opinion, are far superior to the Pay recordings in
terms of interpretation, pitch, nuance, and style. However, Pay's
recording is a good version of what can be done by an artist on a
reproduced original clarinet (whatever that is exactly!!!). I certainly
wouldn't want to try to do these pieces on a 7-key clarinet - but, due to
modern engineering, I don't have to. Be sure to listen carefully to the
Weber 2nd - what Pay can do with less keys is fantastic. However, it
sounds much more even and controlled on a modern instrument - therefore, I
don't ever play the Pay version for students. The 7-key clarinet doesn't
mean that the interpretation is accurate - just that the instrument is.
That's why CDs of original instruments or even reproduced instruments are
problematic - we would rather hear perfection than an honest reproduction
of what the real guys did, and, in fact, we would like to hear the piece
realized in the perfect kind of way the composer wrote it.

The Crussel concertos are also recorded by Leister - and are very, very
good - with less problems techincally. Pitch-wise, we hear a more modern
version of centered pitch as well. No A430!!!

As an owner of an antique automobile, I really enjoy driving it. But I am
always relieved and impressed by the technology of the modern vehicles. Oh
well!

Best wishes,
