A 'D' clarinet is a wonderful thing to have. It uses the same =
mouthpiece as an E-flat clarinet, just as the B-flat and A clarinets use =
the same mouthpiece. Richard Strauss specified 'Clarinet in D' for such =
masterpieces as 'Till Eulenspiegels lustige streiche' and 'Der =
Rosenkavalier.' Some parts written for E-flat clarinet are much easier =
transposed onto the D clarinet. The Stravinsky Violin Concerto is a =
good example.
