I have no doubt that muriatic acid effectively removes the calcium plaque
from the mouthpiece. For adults it is an excellent solution (sorry,
couldn't help myself). Efferdent and CLR work, too. I hesitate to recommend
any of these to kids, though, being poison and all.

I have a similar solution (there I go again!): vinegar. I fill a shot glass
-- OK, in the school I'd use a Dixie cup -- with an inch or so of white
vinegar. Carefully place the mouthpiece in it tip-down, and in no time all
of the guck is gone. If you neglect to carefully rinse, you don't die; it
just doesn't taste so good. (Or if you use balsamic vinegar, very good
indeed).

. . . so you no longer have to whisper in rehearsal, drawing the ire of
conductors. You get to email each other!

[Welcome to the list, Marta!]
