Subject: 20th Century Clarinet Concertos
At a meeting today I was invited to prepare a
apost-grad level lecture and off the cuff I offered
three topics.
With two of them I am on safe ground
but the third started several hares running
during my homeward train journey.
This was to be an assessment of
20th century clarinet concertos, part of the
attraction being than there are only two
months in which any others could be written
so the picture is complete or very nearly.
I scribbled some notes listing them by nationality,
patronage, style, pro- and anti-virtuosity,
instrument (Eb, bass, etc.) adding some
'multiple' concertos for one player (e.g. Geza Frid)
and three players (Martino).
It has all begun to disappear into the fog! So I need a
short list of land-mark concertos without which
my offering (if selected) would be fatally flawed.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Mike Bryant
