Some of them do, Roger. Most of them basically allow the students to play
on stock mouthpieces and tell them to use a Rico 1 1/2 reed (eeyeew). The
store I used to teach out of is a really interesting racket. They sell
reeds for $2.50 apiece!! (I do not know if I ever posted about my situation
with these dreadful people, but the upshot of it all is, that, with one
possible exception, I will NEVER teach out of a music store again) I was so
aghast that I am now having all of my students order reeds by the box over
the internet from WWBW, International, Muncy Winds or another supplier of
their choice. I know that in other areas the local stores are good honest
business people, but not here. I am plumb disgusted. Repairs have come
back to schools that were not even done. Horns were rented out that should
have gone to a landfill. They basically don't carry jack and if you order
something, well, you probably will never get it or you will get something
completely different from what you ordered. It is a sorry state of affairs;
their competitors aren't much better. A new store has come on the scene,
but I'm still waiting to see if much will come of what he is trying to do.
He gets his instruments from an out of town supplier and repairs are done
out of town; there are no supplies of any kind in the shop at this time.
If I must go to a music store, I drive 50+ miles to do it.
Fortunately, other areas do not have situations like this, and their local
stores are run by good honest business people.
Enough of my complaining...
I am grateful for the Internet....
