Ah, no wonder the G sounds stuffier with this alternate fingering.

Well, yes, you *should* be able to do it, but I'm not yet willing to attribute
the abnormal result to something that you are (or are not) doing with your body.
I wonder what would happen if you plugged your mouthpiece into somebody else's
instrument and tried it again. There is no idiosyncracy associated with a leap
from D to G (not in my experience, anyway), and it's not a particularly difficult
or unusual interval, or range, on the instrument. Even jr. high school students
play this interval just fine without a dramatic change in tone. I still lean
toward a theory that there's something "up" with your instrument. If not, then
your other statement applies: just keep working on it -- in all likelihood, this
particular quirk will resolve itself as you continue to develop as a player.

Well, all the speculation in the world isn't going to do much good.
What does your private teacher tell you when you demonstrate it for
her?

Now that's genuinely humorous, because it is so often true! It's amazing
how dramatically one's sound and facility can change, literally overnight.
"What a difference a day makes....24...little hours...." :-).
