You must mean R3, not R1, otherwise you're slurring to an F (according
to the fingering diagram you provided).

No, I do mean R1 -- which gives F all by itself, but gives G if C#
is down also.

Before I say anything else, however, I want to say that my real
question is: I've tried all evening to maintain constant embouchure
and breath, but I can't seem to keep the tone constant with this
particular slurred leap. So I'm waiting to hear if someone tells me:
"You *should* be able to do it, Bill, so keep working on it"; or perhaps
someone will tell me: "This is a standard problem, Bill, and yes, you
need a resonant fingering because D-to-G opens up too many holes at
once."

....anyway, my fingering book shows an alternate fingering for the
G:

TR + L123 + C# + R1 + R.H. B (sliver) + R.H. G# (long fingering)

The book warns that this will be sharp; and it *is* unacceptably sharp
to my ear and to my tuner. But I tried releasing R.H. keys until only
R1 and C# were down, and it sounds OK.

<><> I might add I also wonder if you mean what your language here
suggests: that clarion B, C, and D on your instrument are all generally
stuffy, while your G resonates with clarity. If this is the case, your
goal should be not to match the G to the tone of the three lower notes,
but to determine how to make those three lower notes match the G.

Yes, this has been part of my thought process. But since you
can't hear my playing, there's no way for you to advise me about it. I
will say that they (the clarion notes) sound good to me, whereas my
G-above-the-staff sounds overloaded with high partials.

<><> Do you experience a similar difference in tone between
chalumeau E, F, and G when compared to chalumeau C?

No. I hadn't thought of trying that; but I just did, and the lower
register sounds fine to me. I don't know.... maybe everything will
sound different to me tomorrow. Thanks for the reply, Neil.
