Mozart's willingness to embrace the "latest" technological advancements needs
to also include the basset horn. At the time, the bass clarinet either wasn't
invented or was so much in its infancy as to not be a reliable option. He,
therefore, chose the basset horn as another low voice to go along with, what
had been the only low woodwind voice, the bassoon.
