DEG offers a set of three tuning rings, two being 1 mm and one being 1/2
mm. Price is modest, somewhere around $4.00.

I highly recommend their use when pulling of anywhere close to 1 mm is
required. They eliminate the gap or perterbance in the bore. The gap
that is introduced when pulling causes stuffiness and disproportionately
drops the pitch of the throat tones.

While pitch problems on high A, B and C (clarion) could be caused by
many different design factors, there is one point that has not, to the
best of my memory, been discussed in this thread. The open height of the
Bb/register key can have a substantial effect on tuning. If it opens too
far, long B and C (bottom of clarion) and short clarion notes, high A, B
and C will go sharper than what most players would want. A correct
opening is something less than the thickness of a dime.

Those who are interested in experimenting with the amount of venting of
the register key will find that as the key is gradually lowered (by
adding layers of electricians tape under the key and just above the
thumb ring) B natural (third line) will eventually become stuffy or
fuzzy sounding. A key elevation just before this happens will probably
be best.

Also, a register key that does not over open will give better speaking
for both the clarion and the altissimo registers.
