Players who do not use tuning rings must be hearing impaired! The gap that
is formed when you pull the barrel has a very non-linear tuning effect. The
throat tones are greatly flattened compared to the rest of the instrument.

Try this: Using an electronic tuner, familarize yourself with the
flattening effect on your throat tones while simply pulled out 2mm. Then
put in a 2mm ring. The difference will astound you.

Using tuning rings allows you to flatten the rest of the instrument more
without totally wrecking your throat tones. In short, the whole flattening
effect is far more linear.
