Subject: [kl] Sharp Clarion A, B & C

Greg Smith posted:

"Relocate the register vent up towards the top end of the clarinet about
1mm.
This would drop only the notes mentioned without destroying the twelfths or
any other notes including the throat Bb (if you have the right register tube
configuration). You would have to extend the length of the register key a
bit."

Clark:

I have never had the B**** to do this with my own instruments, Greg, but I
know it can be a good solution. Was there any deficit in the "longer tube"
notes? How is the pitch of the throat Bb?

Greg:
Terrific with the right shape and length register tube. There are no effects
on the long notes that I can discern.

Clark:
I stated in an earlier post that I had experienced some sharpness in this
area with a few Zinner blanks.

Greg Smith responded:

"Which ones Clark? All of the ones that I've played show a tendency to be
right on in that area and ever so slightly under (5 cents maybe) in the
bottom twelfths. Both blanks do this for me. In fact, this seems by all
accounts that I've witnessed or experienced to be one of the extraordinary
things about the blank...that the twelfths are so close together without the
throats dropping too low."

Clark:

Greg, I have not used the Zinner blanks in over two years and perhaps the
few that had this problem were not the proper bore. These were the "original
Zinners", not the "E" series. I had more of a problem with many of them
playing flat with my curve. I never explored the shorter curve, which may
have corrected the intonation deficits I was experiencing. I know of several
excellent players that use your mouthpiece or Richard Hawkins and don't seem
to experience any unusual tuning problems.

Greg:

Interesting. Both of these models, the older A and the newer E have similar
excellent tuning characteristics for me.
Perhaps it was the curve? I don't know.

Clark:
The Tuning Article will have to wait a bit, I am giving birth to the
"Synthetic Speed Tonguing" article at this time.
