The tuning rings maintain the inner diameter of the bore by filling in the
space that would otherwise exist between the top of the upper joint tenon
and where the bore continues in the barrel, which continues all the way out
to the inner wall of the barrel tenon socket. Taken all together, this can
be a very significant increase in volume, especially when you pull out more
than 1/8 inch or so. I know doing that messes up the intonation of the
throat tones for me.
