It's really necessary to clean the interior after each playing
session, not just every once in a while.
However, you *don't* want to pull a full-sized clarinet swab
through your mouthpiece. This will damage the various sharp edges.
What I do is gently push a piece of Kleenex (tm) into first one end
of the mouthpiece and then the other end, without pulling the tissue all
the way through, and then I rotate the tissue a little bit in order to
do some mechanical scrubbing.
Another approach is to use a swab for a smaller instrument which
will pass easily through a clarinet mouthpiece.
