Subj: [kl] Joaquin's performance of K. 622
Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 07:57:01 -0400

Now that the matter of the edition used in Joaquin's performance of K.
622 with the English Chamber Orchestra is out of the way (and,
hopefully, some good information was made known by that discussion), I
listened to the entire recording several times.

It is an extraordinarily controlled performance and the second movement
is stupifyingly well-executed. I suspect that if the performance of
this movement were contrasted with others, it would wind up on the slow
side of any statistical measurement, but certainly well within the range
of acceptable tempi for a slow movement.

Personally, I wanted more improvisation in the slow movement and a
greater departure in his Eingang. It's the same one that EVERYBODY
plays.

But insofar as execution is concerned, it is as good a performance as
one will hear anywhere. The control is exceptional and there is even a
little vibrato in the most passionate sections of the movement. I kept
playing it over and over, so impressive was it.

As I write this note, I am listening to the performance and I keep
finding new things in it. Splendid playing by any measurement.
