Time has simply "filtered out" those that cracked, especially any serious
ones. They were discarded. Basically things like wooden clarinets will
crack within the first few years if they are going to crack at all. In
business, this is referred to as "infant mortality." While older
instruments have been known to crack occasionally, it is less common simply
because those that were prone to crack have already done so.
