I was taught to sand the entire back -- obviously while pressing the
entire reed flat onto the (unwrinkled) paper and glass, it wouldn't do
to grind the tip away -- but I'm willing to listen. At my stage of
development, I doubt that I can hear any difference between avoiding the
tip and not, if a difference exists.
