I finally solved the problem by getting several sets of eyeglasses.

Polaroid distance glasses for daytime driving.
Distance glasses that are Transitions (get darker in the sun) but they don't
darken inside a car.
Half reading glasses so I can read and also see at a distance (blurry).
Full size set to a focal length of about 3 feet for staring at a computer
screen all day and also for playing. I can see a blurry conductor if I look
up or clearly if I look over the tops.
Another full size 3' pair that are Transitions for parading. (No comments on
marching bands. Us old guys get our only exercise this way!)

I tried Progressives (no line between) but they distort too much for playing
and I'm constantly straining my neck to tip them to the right angle.
Progressives are probably better if there is no major difference between
your distance and close up requirements. But as you get older --!

In summary, I'm juggling several sets at all times.

P.S. Forgot to mention that my daughter is an optician so that I
experimented relatively cheaply.

I have bifocals that are sort of upside down. The main area is the reading
prescription and there is a narrow window at the top with my distance Rx
(in case I should want to see the conductor - grin). These work for me :)
