With all this discussion about mouthpieces, ligatures and reeds, has anyone
seriously thought lately that the sound coming out of the bell (and/or
nearest tone hole) essentially comes from within, the very essence of our
soul? I've found that as I've mellowed a little over my years of study,
that the tone has warmed and rounded, and I've essentially been using the
same reeds, although I now have a very nice Bay mouthpiece. When you get
down to it, we are all singers through our instruments, music is all about
conveying emotions, and if you are in love with the music you are playing,
surely that comes out in the sound and the audience feels it? That's what I
look for in a performance, be it my own or someone else's.

(I have a great story about a pianist who broke my heart, and the next week
my teacher noticed an amazing new dimension to my sound)

Love Kathy Williams
