Roger G. says:

<<But Walter, the only way to sound more like David (in terms of tone concept) is to reproduce what he does in terms of air, embouchure, voicing,etc.........>>

Yes! And the (my) mouthpiece as a TOOL allows me to do exactly this. I MIGHT NOT be able to do the same playing on Shifrin's equipment.

Walter Said: <<Now, here is the interesting part. Both Roger and I studied with Shifrin, and had I believe equally "musically significant" learning experiences with him. However, Roger and I appear to be going in opposite directions in our mouthpiece endeavors. The mouthpiece he describes, as unplayable for him, is exactly what I am producing. My tip opening range from 1.00 to 1.05 mm.>>

Roger says: <<David plays on a 1.24-1.26 tip though........just a minor issue.>>

Walter says: I can and have played on mouthpieces like that. I'm sure my first Jimmy Pyne was that open. However, I prefer what the Zinner blanks allow me to do, both in playing, as well as mouthpiece work, and they work much better with a closer tip.

Also, speaking personally, I can articulte at only average speed on an open tip. On a closed tip I can move to a much higher plane.

Roger says: <<Walter has successfully presented the point I was making regarding differences in blanks and designs. Actually, I think his approach is more
similar to Richard Hawkins' than mine - which means we are making mouthpieces with the same goals but with different techniques. >>

Exactly, and thanks for the compliment Roger. Yes, there is no ONE right path.
