INCREASING THE FACILITY AND SPEED OF YOUR ARTICULATION

One of my pupils, Ivan Cenenco, has a rapid staccato. When I asked him
how he practices staccato, he told me that his teachers in Moscow -
Mosgovenko and Sokolov ( who died just recently ) - told him to
exercise practicing with the tongue ON THE REED practically all the
time.

As you near your tongue towards the reed while blowing, be aware of the
vibration of the reed on your tongue. Move your tongue ever so slightly
toward the mouthpiece; notice that the tone stops.

Keep blowing and move your tongue slightly away. This time, try to keep
your tongue on the vibrating part of the reed, the very tip.
In other words, make the smallest movement possible with your tongue.
You will thereby increase the speed of your staccato because the tongue
does not travel far. Later you can tongue with more vigor, but you
should first try to acquire a light touch by practicing in this fashion.

Try this simple exercise to loosen up tongue movement. You might
probably like the results!
