In response to the story about tte conductor who dismissed the clarinetist
for playing K. 622 on a B-flat horn, I spent the entire summer preparing the
Mozart Concerto on a B-flat horn. About a month and a half before my
audition for the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, I put in my order at the
Woodwind and Brasswind for my A clarinet. The audition came and still no A
clarinet (I guess they were backed up with orders from schools), so I went
to the audition and played it on my Bb. The guys doing the audition were
really friendly, but they kinda winced when I said I was playing it in
B-flat. It must not have bothered them too much though, because I got in
after all! (Here's the best part--two days after the audition, my A clarinet
came. Two days. I know it would've taken me a few weeks at least to get used
to the horn, but it's the principle of the thing.)
