It IS quite a bit more fun to watch the mechanical contrivances of an
earlier age do their thing, but the newer electronic ones actually do it
much better. I used to spend a lot of time in a museum much like you
describe myself, and marveled at the ingenuity displayed. But remember,
they still record the performances by having someone actually PLAY on a
recording version of the machine, just like in the old days, at least on
the Yamaha Disklavier. As before, post-production can be used to correct
mistakes, etc.
