re: the social perceptions of key... i play klezmer & turkish music, & one
of the main keys/scales/makams used in this stuff, hijaz, is basically a
phrygian with a major 3d instead of a minor one. this makes the I chord
major, of course. Yet people--musicians or not--inevitably refer to it as a
minor key if i'm playing something sad/slow, & a major one if i'm playing
something happy & upbeat, often even if it's exactly the same melody sped
up!
