Bill,
You might want to dig through "The Psychology of Music" 2nd edition, editied
by Diana Deutsch. There's something somewhere in there about this, but a
quick scan of the articles didn't bring it up. I think you'd really enjoy
the book, too, especially in relation to your enjoyment of "Descartes'
Error". Some of the articles fit in well, and some would be very thought
provoking for you.
