Subj: [kl] Zinner mouthpiece blanks - the Chedeville of today?

OK, I admit it. I am totally impressed by the quality of the mouthpiece
blanks I am getting from Zinner.

I like the Angled Wall blank.

I like the Straight Wall #2 (1 mm +) blank.

I love the Eb blanks.

I also am totally impresed with the Cocobolo blank I got last summer. What
workmanship!

As a mouthpiece technician, they are a joy to work with. As a clarinetist,
they are a joy to play on.

Wednesday night, I played the Mozart and Brahms Quintets in concert. I used a
mouthpiece I made from a Straight Wall blank (#2). My pitch on my "A" was
better than I have ever been able to acheive before. I'm sure many of you are
aware of the many unisons and octaves with the first violin involving clarion
A, B natural, and C. Usually these notes are sharp, or your throat tones are
quite flat. This mouthpiece really helped me tame that.

Even better, I was able to change "color" easliy and fluently, something I
have always admired in other players, especially Shifrin.

My question is this. We all admire the old mouthpieces of the "golden era"
especially those made from the Chedeville blank. When we look back on this
period, will the Zinner blank be so regarded?

For any who think this post self-serving, let me add that Richard Hawkins and
Greg Smith utilize the Zinner blank. I will also confess a debt to Richard
Hawkins for some helpful e-mails that pointed me on the way to success in
using these blanks.

Happy playing.
