I agree. In fact, I would go one step further and insist she work on this;
give her other things to work on that are for enjoyment and have this as a
requirement.
My first long term clarinet teacher (7th, 8th, 9th grade of jr. high)
insisted I study the second movement of the Mozart concerto and the first
things we worked on were phrasing and breathing. Coupled with the Rose 32,
2 at a time,for breathing, articulation and technique, I was learning in a
very disciplined approach. The amazing thing was, I transferred what I was
learning to the band music and I was not only achieving first chairs, I also
could play fairly musically. I owe that teacher, Mrs. Anita Price, a great
deal. She is retired now, I believe, and I don't know if she lurks on the
list or not, but if so, I wish her the best. A teacher does not have to be
famous or have a lot of gadgets lying around to know how to communicate
music and good solid clarinet playing to his/her students.
Rachel, don't be afraid to insist on certain things with your students.
Compromise on some items is okay, as long as the student realizes that some
things are bottom line and are required.
Good luck with the instrument.
