Actually, I can name several people who have long careers as conductors who
can't conduct, and are no musician. However, I won't do so on the list.

When Maazel was a candidate for conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra,
according to what I was told by some people who were close to the situation,
the vote in the orchestra was (give or take a few votes one way or the
other) 4 in favor, 104 opposed. Naturally, he was the one that the board
hired.
