I recently played one of the Septets that
Hanns Eisler wrote for a film that was never made
while in California. I knew in advance that
I would be called upon to explain who he was and why
such a clever composer, who wrote such happy, witty music,
was virtually forgotten.. so I check up .. born in Leipzig,
studied with Schoenberg in Vienna, arrived in the
USA in 1933 to escape the Nazis, was music assistant
to Chaplin 42-47 in Hollywood but submitted to
'voluntary deportation' in 1948 as result of his
left wing politics. Composed the national anthem
of East Germany in 1949. Died in East Berlin in 1962
