Ooooooooo, I sense a reply aclaw from Shadow Cat! In the interim...my
normally gentle cat, Pushkin (see the photograph of the orange cat on my
website), all 12 pounds of her, has learned how to handle a 53 pound
dog. First, eat his puppy chow: she likes it and it helps keep her weight
under control. Second, if the dog is feeling his oats (or puppy chow),
puff up to double size, hiss, spit, bare claws and fangs, and leap on the
aforementioned dog. She recently vaulted off the floor and landed squarely
on the dog's neck, all four legs extended, claws out. It's hard to tell
who was more scared: the cat or the dog. But the dog now gives her a
somewhat respectful distance.

Also interesting: of the four cats in the house, Pushkin and the other
female seem to have taken on the role of their jungle-cat cousins, i.e., as
hunters and enforcers in charge of keeping the hound in line. The two male
cats sit on their butts most of the time, preening themselves:-). The two
females used to hate each other; they've now formed an alliance based on a
common enemy and get along acceptably well. "The enemy of my enemy is my
friend," and other such political maxims.

Shadow, you have anything you want to add, or are you too busy chasing Mr.
Vigorous around Lelia's house?

Ken
