I played Celebration Overture under Paul Creston's directon when I was in
college. He was a guest lecturer and we played some of his works for band
including his alto saxophone concerto. Funny thing, we were also playing his
Anatolia- Turkish Rhapsody. He was supposed to conduct the piece on the
concert, but after attempting it several times, he said "I know how this
goes, but I cannot conduct it. I would like to ask your director if he would
mind conducting it on the concert." Creston did not conduct that one.
Other difficult band pieces for clarinet include Menotti's Overture and
Caccia. Great clarinet stuff and hard. Makris Agean Festival is also good
stuff with a great clarinet cadenza. Also, don't forget Mark Hindsley's
transcription of Copeland's El Salon Mexico and the transcription of Elgar's
Enigma Variations. (I don't remember who transcribed it)
