That's a fair question.

We are fortunate (?) to have a rather large collection of trumpet loonies in
the Tualatin Valley Community Band. Several of them could now be called "brass
collectors" because of the number of instruments they bring to rehearsal. Part
of this is thanks to Joe Marcinkiewicz, a band member who makes his living
building trumpets and trumpet mouthpieces. At least one of our members
essentially did a short apprenticeship in his shop in exchange for the right to
build his own instrument.

We generally do get cornet, trumpet, flugelhorn, and even the occasional
piccolo trumpet parts played on the genuine instruments. Given the subtle
differences in design, I am surprised by the large difference in sound. There
have been many times I've been startled by the gentle entrance of a cornet
after a long sequence by the brighter trumpet.
